Uruguay: General strike August 22

The PIT-CNT labor union is planning to carry out a partial general strike across Uruguay on Thursday, September 27. Supporter are being asked to observe the work stoppage from 09:00 until 13:00 (local time). PIT-CNT leaders are organizing a rally and march in the capital of Montevideo. Participants will gather outside the Ministry of Economy and Finance at 10:00 before marching to the National Chamber of Commerce and Services of Uruguay. Associated demonstrations are possible in urban areas nationwide. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all protest sites.

According to the PIT-CNT, the strike is being held to protest employers who try to eliminate negotiation and wage councils for workers. Union leaders claim that thousands of workers are unable to improve their salaries or working conditions without the councils. The organization is also protesting an irrigation law that they claim privatizes water.

Individuals in Uruguay, particularly in Montevideo, are advised to avoid demonstrations as a precaution.
