A fire erupted in southern Croatia on Wednesday, September 26, and has been progressing towards the village of Mokalo on the Peljesac peninsula. At least 40 residents and tourists in camping areas have reportedly been evacuated. Strong winds have accompanied these wildfires, disrupting ferry traffic between Croatian islands, as well as on bridges and highways. Further evacuations and road closures are possible as firefighters work to contain the fire.


Individuals in affected areas are advised to exercise caution when traveling near the wildfire, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and monitor the situation. Children and those with respiratory illnesses are advised to limit outdoor activity.
