Keenbrook Fire at Cajon Pass in San Bernardino county (California state) forces temporary closure of Interstate 15 on September 26; residual disruptions to be anticipated in near-term

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/26/2018, 11:30 AM until 9/27/2018, 11:59 PM (America/Los_Angeles). COUNTRY/REGION Cajon Pass

A fast-moving brush fire broke out along the Cajon Pass (San Bernardino county, California state) on Wednesday morning (local time), September 26, causing significant transportation disruptions in the area. The blaze, dubbed the Keenbrook Fire, was first reported as a small fire on the western side of Interstate 15 around 11:00, but quickly grew to over 50 acres by Wednesday afternoon, prompting authorities to temporarily close a section of I-15 in both directions. Although most lanes were reopened by 15:00, major traffic disruptions should continue to be anticipated in the coming hours. Advisory evacuations, signaling that residents should be prepared to evacuate if ordered, remain in effect for Mathews Ranch and structures to the north of fire. Local authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

I-15 is a major freeway serving the western United States, and links Southern California with Las Vegas (Nevada). Wildfires are frequent in California from May through November.

Individuals in affected areas are advised to exercise caution when traveling near the wildfire, adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and monitor the situation. Children and those with respiratory illnesses are advised to limit outdoor activity.
