Abortion rights groups plan to march in Mexico City on Friday, September 28, to demand the legalization of abortion. Participants are expected to gather at Monumento a la Madre at 15:30 (local time) and march to El Zócalo. Other related demonstrations are planned in Ciudad Juárez beginning at 18:00 at El Monumento a Juárez; in Matamoros beginning at 19:00 in the El Parque Cultural Olímpico; as well as in Monterrey, Puebla, and Oaxaca. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected near all demonstration sites.
Abortion remains a controversial issue in Mexico. While the legality of abortion services varies by state, federal law only allows the termination of pregnancy in the event of rape.
Individuals in Mexico are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution
