Mali: Seven soldiers killed in blast on September 26

Mali News Alert

At least seven soldiers and a civilian killed in a blast between Bambara-Maoudé and Douentza on September 26

TIMEFRAME expected from 9/27/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/4/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Bamako). COUNTRY/REGION Mopti, Tombouctou

At approximately 16:00 (local time) on Wednesday, September 26, two Malian military vehicles hit landmines or improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on the road between Bambara-Maoudé (Tombouctou region) and Douentza (Mopti region). According to a military spokesperson, suspected Islamist militants subsequently attacked the convoy. At least seven soldiers and a civilian driver were killed in the attack.

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world, and a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds.

The security environment in Mali remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.

Due to the underlying terrorist and kidnapping threats prevalent in the country, all those present in Mali are advised to remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc. Individuals are also advised to avoid public events and places frequented by Westerners, to remain vigilant at all times (especially in local markets, now used by terrorists as recruitment grounds), and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
