Shops and pharmacies are expected to be closed across the country on Friday, September 28, to protest developments in the retail and pharmacy industries. The Confederation of All Indian Traders (CAIT) called for a nationwide bandh, or strike, on Friday to protest the acquisition of a large Indian retailer by Walmart. The group is calling for a trade bandh and the closure of all shops in New Delhi, including at Connaught Place and other prominent markets. A protest will also be held at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Friday. Meanwhile, the All India Organization of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) called for an all-day bandh to call for the stricter regulation of e-pharmacies. This will be the third such action by the AIOCD. It is unclear how many pharmacies will be affected by the strike, though some municipalities are banning the action.
Individuals in India, particularly in New Delhi, are advised to monitor updates to the situation and anticipate closures of businesses and other disruptions to daily life.
