The MozaiQ Association, a pro-LGBT civil society organization, is planning to stage a protest at Victory Square in Bucharest from 13:00 (local time) to 16:00 on Sunday, September 30. The demonstration has reportedly been organized to denounce and call for a boycott of an upcoming October 7 referendum on a proposed constitutional amendment that would effectively ban same-sex marriage if passed. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the demonstration site. Similar protests are possible in Bucharest and in other Romanian cities in the coming days ahead of the referendum.
In September, Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea announced that the referendum would be held on October 7, following pressure from the Coaliția pentru Familie civil society coalition which has sought to alter the definition of a family in Romania, de facto outlawing same-sex marriage.
Individuals in Bucharest are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
