On Monday, October 1, four unidentified assailants assaulted a German couple in Boma (Kongo-Central) around 22:00 (local time). The victims were parked near a cemetery when confronted by the assailants; the German man tried to resist by spraying a self-defense substance at the assailants and was subsequently fatally stabbed. The woman survived the attack. A security operation is underway to find the assailants. Further such criminal attacks are possible.
Crime rates are high throughout the country due to poor economic conditions and social inequalities. Theft, burglary, carjacking, assault, and extortion are common. Foreigners are regularly targeted due to their assumed wealth.
According to local authorities, Boma has become a high risk area in the Kongo Central due to increased criminal activities.
Individuals present in the DRC are advised to be extremely vigilant, always be aware of their surroundings, avoid walking around especially at night, keep valuable-looking belongings out of sight, and not offer resistance in the event of an attempted mugging. When traveling by car, lock doors and keep windows closed. Permanent professional security protection is strongly advised.
