Numerous students from the University of Zambia (UNZA) rioted and clashed with police overnight night October 4-5. Protesters blocked the Great East Road with burning tires, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. In the process, a student dormitory caught fire. Similar violence is possible in the coming days. Localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near any demonstration sites.
Students are denouncing a two-month delay in the payment of meal and accommodation allowances.
Individuals in Lusaka are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
