Event

Protests erupted in the Hillbrow neighborhood of Johannesburg on Saturday morning (local time), October 6, culminating in clashes with police forces. Initially attacking the homes of suspected drug dealers, protesters later blocked roads with burning tires and clashed with police. Police reportedly fired rubber bullets to disperse protesters. Further civil unrest is possible in Hillbrow and other parts of Johannesburg.

Context

Protests in Johannesburg began on September 28 after a woman was killed from crossfire in a gang-related shooting in Westbury. Protests in Westbury, and associated protests across Johannesburg, have continued as residents demand increased policing.

Advice

Individuals in Johannesburg, particularly in the Ennerdale area, are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate transportation delays, avoid all demonstrations and protests as a precaution, never cross a roadblock without permission, and to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
