Zambia: Students riot in Lusaka October 4-5


Hundreds of students from the University of Zambia (UNZA) protested in Lusaka on Monday, October 8, to denounce the death of a student killed clashes with police overnight night October 4-5. Similar protests are possible in the coming days. Localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near any demonstration sites


Students protested October 4-5 to denounce a two-month delay in the payment of meal and accommodation allowances. They blocked roads near the university with burning tires, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. In the process, a student dormitory caught fire.


Individuals in Lusaka are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
