On Sunday, October 7, suspected Mapuche militants fired live ammunition at police forces in the town of Ercilla (Araucanía region). According to local sources, no militants or police officers were wounded in the clashes. A heightened security presence is anticipated in the area in the near-term. Further such attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

Indigenous communities in south-central Chile have long accused the government and private companies of taking their ancestral land. In recent years, individuals and groups claiming to represent the interests of the Mapuche indigenous people have resorted to acts of violence including arson attacks against fields, forests, vehicles, machinery, and residences. These attacks have resulted in deaths and millions of dollars worth of damage.
