Somalia: Al-Shabaab executes five suspected spies

Somalia News Alert

Al-Shabaab claims responsibility for the killing of five spies in Jilib October 9

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/11/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/13/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Mogadishu). COUNTRY/REGION Somalia

On Wednesday, October 10, Al-Shabaab released a statement claiming responsibility for the killing of five foreign and local nationals - including US, UK, and Somali nationals - suspected of being spies. The five had been shot dead in the town of Jilib (Middle Juba region) in a public execution the day prior.

Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Individuals in Somalia are advised to remain vigilant and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
