Iraq: Islamic State attacks gas field in Anbar province Oct. 10

Iraq News Alert

Islamic State (IS) militants kill at least ten security forces members in attack on natural gas field in Anbar province October 10; similar IS attacks possible in Anbar province in the coming weeks

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/11/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/17/2018, 11:59 PM (Asia/Baghdad). COUNTRY/REGION Anbar

Islamic State (IS) militants launched an attack on a natural gas field in western Anbar province late (local time) on Wednesday, October 10, killing at least ten Iraqi security force members before being repelled by members of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Similar IS attacks on security forces are possible in Anbar province in the coming weeks.

Although Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over IS in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in northern and western Iraq. IS militants continue to carry out attacks, notably against security forces. High-profile attacks often prompt equally significant security responses, including enhanced checkpoint operations and more proactive operations, with resulting effects on transit.

Individuals in Anbar province are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
