A pair of bombing attacks killed at least 11 people and wounded more than ten others in Baidoa (Bay region) on Saturday, October 13. The suicide bombing and grenade attacks reportedly targeted a restaurant and a hotel, respectively, and are suspected of having been coordinated by Al-Shabaab militants. The death toll may rise over the coming hours, according to local officials. Similar Al-Shabaab attacks are possible in Baidoa and other areas of southern Somalia in the near-term.
Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
Individuals in Somalia, and particularly those in Bay region, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
