Nigeria News Alert

Oil pipeline explodes in Abia state following a raid by oil thieves, killing 30 people October 12

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/14/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/17/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Abia

Event

An oil pipeline caught fire and exploded in Abia state early (local time) on Friday, October 12, killing 30 people and injuring several others. The pipeline reportedly ignited and exploded as suspected petrol thieves attempted to steal oil from it. Similar attacks on pipelines are possible in southern Nigeria in the coming weeks.

Context

An increasing number of militant groups are active in the Delta region, targeting oil and gas facilities. At least six armed groups have been formed since February 2016. Sustained attacks on oil facilities have brought Nigeria's oil production to a 30-year low. Nigeria has historically depended on the oil sector for 70 percent of its government revenue and 90 percent of its foreign exchange.

Advice

Individuals in Abia state and elsewhere in southern Nigeria are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
