Norway: Severe flooding in western districts October 15

Norway News Alert

Officials extend orange weather alert in Sogn og Fjordane, and Ottavassdraget on October 15; flooding and road closures persist

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/14/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/17/2018, 11:59 PM (Europe/Oslo). COUNTRY/REGION Sogn og Fjordane, Oppland

Event

The Norwegian weather service Varsom extended an orange weather alert on Monday, October 15, for the county of Sogn og Fjordane, and Ottavassdraget, after severe flooding and landslides impacted the area beginning on Sunday, October 14. Authorities have closed several roadways and evacuated roughly 100 people after flash floods isolated several villages in western Norway. While floodwater began to recede on October 15, many roads remain impassable due to debris and many households remain without power.

Context

While heavy rains are typical in October and November, a sudden heatwave in parts of western Norway saw temperatures rise from 11°C (51°F) to 25°C (77°F) in the span of an hour, resulting in rapid snowmelt and severe storms.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
