Outgoing President Abdulla Yameen, who was defeated with a large margin in the September 23 presidential election, filed a request to the Supreme Court on Sunday, October 14, for the annulment of the election and for a fresh one to be organized. Opposition protests are likely in the coming days in the vicinity of the Supreme Court as it hears the case and delivers its verdict.

Context

Yameen initially conceded defeat to opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the immediate aftermath of the election but is now clamming the election was rigged. He is meant to step down and hand over power to Solih on November 17.

Individuals present in the Maldives, notably the capital Malé, are advised to avoid all public gatherings as they may turn violent, monitor developments, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
