Thousands marched in Plaza Italia (Santiago) on Sunday, October 14, in honor of the resistance of indigenous Mapuche people. The mobilization demanded the liberation of indigenous political prisoners, the end of alleged abuse toward indigenous people, and the return of expropriated ancestral lands. A protester was detained and a police officer was injured in clashes that erupted between protesters and police forces. Further low-level violence is possible in the near-term.

Context

Protesters claimed to be marching to protest the violations against indigenous people in Chile. The Mapuche movements traditionally defend the innocence of detainees and demand the release of whom they believe to be political prisoners.
