South Africa News Alert

Residual rail transportation delays possible in Gauteng province after fires on trains at Germiston station October 16; flames extinguished

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/16/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/16/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Germiston station (Gauteng province)

Fires were reported on two passenger trains at Germiston station (Gauteng province) on Tuesday, October 16, halting rail transportation at the station and resulting in injuries. Authorities suspect that the trains were intentionally set on fire. Though the flames have been extinguished, residual rail transportation disruptions are possible over the coming hours.

This is likely the fourth incident of arson targeting South African train cars since September 21. Commuters are known to set train cars on fire to protest rail transportation delays.

Potentially affected travelers are advised to monitor developments to the situation, report all suspicious objects or behavior to police, prepare for residual train delays, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
