A train ran into a crowd of people in Amritsar (Punjab state) on the evening (local time) of Friday, October 19. According to initial reports, at least 50 people were killed in the accident. Around 1000 people had gathered at Joda Fatak to celebrate Dusshera and failed to hear the train whistle over the sound of firecrackers. Recovery efforts are ongoing and rail disruptions are likely in the area.
