Students protested in the capital Conakry on Monday, October 22, to demand the resumption of classes suspended since October 3, due to an ongoing nationwide teacher strike. Clashes between security forces and angry students occurred in the Kipé, Koloma, and Kaloum districts of the capital. Security forces eventually managed to disperse the crowds using tear gas. At least seven people were arrested. Further such protests are likely as long as the situation remains unresolved.
Numerous similar teacher strikes and related violent student protests have been held in Guinea in 2017-2018. Teachers are demanding higher salaries, which the government has refused to accept.
Individuals in Guinea, particularly Conakry, are advised to remain vigilant and avoid all protests.
