Event

Security forces forcibly dispersed a crowd that had gathered to protest their eviction from buildings in the Pakistan Quarters neighborhood in Karachi, on Wednesday, October 24. Anti-riot police used tear gas, water cannons, and batons to break up the protesters, who had erected barricades around the buildings and were throwing stones at the security forces. Initial reports indicate that at least 16 people have been injured, including six police officers, and several protesters have been arrested. The eviction operation has been temporarily suspended. Further such protests are likely should the operation resume in the coming days or weeks. Residual disruptions can be expected in the immediate vicinity of the protest.

Context

The Supreme Court, which ordered the eviction, had given police until October 24 to dislodge illegal residents of 400 houses.

Advice

Individuals in Karachi are advised to monitor developments and avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence.
