Pakistan: Workers abducted and killed in North Waziristan Oct. 23

Pakistan News Alert

Oil workers abducted and killed near Abba Khel (North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on October 23; no group immediately claims responsibility for attack

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/23/2018, 12:00 AM until 10/24/2018, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Abba Khel (North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa)

Four workers of an oil and gas exploration company were found dead shortly after being abducted near Abba Khel (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on Tuesday, October 23. Unidentified assailants reportedly abducted the workers as they traveled to a field site, subsequently shooting them and setting fire to their vehicle. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Additional militant attacks are possible in North Waziristan in the near-term.

Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Al-Qai'da, Islamic State (IS) affiliates, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, Afghan Taliban, and other Islamist militant groups continue to pose a threat throughout the country despite continued army offensives to push them from their northwestern strongholds near the Afghan border.

Individuals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, particularly those in North Waziristan, are advised to remain vigilant for militant activity and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the relevant authorities. Due to a high threat from terrorism, as well as kidnapping and sectarian violence, some Western governments advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the country as foreign nationals, especially Westerners, may be directly targeted. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to the area.
