Israel News Alert

Jordan to end border land lease deal with Israel; protests possible in coming days and weeks

TIMEFRAME expected from 10/26/2018, 12:00 AM until 11/2/2018, 11:59 PM (Asia/Amman). COUNTRY/REGION Jordan, West Bank

Event

King Abdullah announced on October 21 that a border land lease deal with neighboring Israel would not be extended, two days after protests were held demanding that Jordan reclaim sovereignty over the leased territories. Israel has responded that it would negotiate with Jordan over the matter. Further demonstrations are possible in the coming days and weeks in support of the king's declaration.

Context

The border agreement, which leases the Jordanian territories of Baqura and Ghumar to Israel for agricultural purposes, is part of a 1994 peace agreement signed between the two countries. The lease agreement was set to be automatically renewed on October 25 before expiring in 2019.

Advice

Individuals in Jordan should avoid all protests as a precaution.
