Al-Shabaab militants carried out a triple vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack in Mogadishu on the afternoon (local time) of Friday, November 9, killing at least 17 people. Some small-arms fire was reported after the blasts; follow-on attackers who attempted to gain entry to the Sahafi and Hayat hotels (close to the K4 junction) were killed by security forces following the VBIED detonations, which took place around the Sahafi Hotel and near the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Al-Shabaab militants may attempt to carry out similar attacks in Mogadishu in the near term.

Al-Shabaab continues to conduct bombings and assassinations in southern and central Somalia, including in Mogadishu, where the risk of militant attacks from the group remains high amid a general lack of effective counterterrorism measures. The group frequently targets government and international delegate convoys, infrastructure, and personnel.

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to avoid the area of the blasts, monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Somalia remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
