Nigeria News Alert

Two Boko Haram attacks near Maiduguri November 10 prompt hundreds to flee

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/12/2018, 12:00 AM until 11/15/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Maiduguri

Boko Haram militants attacked the town of Jimmi and an IDP (internally displaced persons) camp in nearby Kayamla, both located near Maiduguri (Borno state), on Saturday, November 10. The assailants opened fire and set fire to several houses, injuring a number of people and killing at least one; hundreds others fled to nearby areas. Security reinforcements were quickly deployed to repel the attacks.

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Individuals in Borno state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
