Turkey: Clashes between Uber and taxi drivers in Istanbul

Turkey News Alert

Further clashes possible between taxi and Uber drivers in Istanbul amid rising criticism of app-based ride-sharing services

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/16/2018, 1:00 AM until 12/1/2018, 12:59 AM (Europe/Istanbul). COUNTRY/REGION Istanbul

Further clashes between taxi and Uber drivers are possible in Istanbul in the coming weeks amid a surge in violence related to app-based ride-sharing services. On November 13, a dispute erupted between a taxi and Uber driver in a waiting line. A similar incident involving an Uber passenger occurred the day prior.

Taxi drivers have complained that the number of people seeking taxis has declined, along with their income, since Uber began operating in Istanbul in 2014. Related violence also took place in March 2018, when taxi drivers ordered Uber cars and beat their drivers in isolated parts of the city on numerous occasions. Uber has released statements about the rising number of violent incidents targeting Uber vehicles in the country.

Individuals in Istanbul are advised to keep abreast of the situation and remain vigilant if using app-based ride-sharing services.
