Mali News Alert

Catholic pilgrimage in Kita (Kayes region) to draw thousands on November 17-18; heightened security presence anticipated

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/16/2018, 12:00 AM until 11/18/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Bamako). COUNTRY/REGION Kita

Thousands of people will gather in the western town of Kita (Kayes region) on Saturday, November 17, and Sunday, November 18, for a pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A heightened security presence is expected due to a higher risk of insurgent attacks.

Individuals in the area are advised to avoid all large public gatherings as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

Due to the underlying terrorist and kidnapping threats prevalent in the country, all those present in Mali are advised to remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc. Individuals are also advised to avoid public events and places frequented by Westerners, to remain vigilant at all times (especially in local markets, now used by terrorists as recruitment grounds), and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
