TIMEFRAME expected from 11/16/2018, 12:00 AM until 11/23/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Nairobi). COUNTRY/REGION Elgeyo-Marakwet

Violent intercommunal clashes broke out in the Kerio Valley (Elgeyo-Marakwet county) on the evening (local time) of Thursday, November 15. At least four people, including one police officer, were killed in the fighting. It is currently unclear what sparked the violence. Additional clashes are possible in the coming days.

Individuals in Elgeyo-Marakwet county are advised to monitor the situation, remain vigilant for signs of intercommunal unrest, avoid any related demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.

On a separate note, due to the significant terrorist threat and other security concerns, many Western governments advise against travel to a number of regions in the country, including areas bordering Somalia (i.e. parts of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Lamu counties), Ethiopia, and South Sudan, as well as nonessential travel to the city of Mombasa. Several Nairobi neighborhoods, including Eastleigh and Pangani, are also best avoided.
