Some 20,000 farmers are expected to hold a demonstration in Maharashtra state on Wednesday, November 21, into Thursday, November 22. Participants are slated to march from Thane to Somaiya Ground in Mumbai's Sion area on Wednesday and then march overnight to Azad Maidan in the city's Fort area. Continued protests and a sit-in, organized by the farmer and laborer organization Lok Shangharsh Morcha, are planned at Azad Maidan until the demonstrators' demands are met. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the march route and demonstration sites over the coming days.
Farmers have reportedly organized the protest to demand a minimum support price for their goods that is 50 percent higher than production costs, judicial oversight of such pricing, drought compensation, and a farm loan waiver, among other issues. The march comes eight months after a similar protest march in Mumbai.
Individuals in Maharashtra state are advised to avoid the protest route, prepare for transportation disruptions, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
