Locally acquired case of dengue fever reported in Miami-Dade county November 19; take precautions against mosquitoes

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/21/2018, 12:00 AM until 11/28/2018, 11:59 PM (America/New_York). COUNTRY/REGION Miami-Dade county (Florida)

On Monday, November 19, health authorities reported a locally acquired case of dengue fever in Miami-Dade county (Florida). The report marks the first locally transmitted case to be confirmed in Florida in 2018. Local health and environmental officials are reportedly working to eliminate mosquitoes and mosquito breeding grounds in the affected area.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease found mostly in urban and semi-urban areas. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, nausea, and rash. In a small number of cases, the potentially deadly dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) may develop, resulting in internal bleeding, enlargement of the liver, and high fever.

Individuals present in Miami-Dade county are advised to take measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites (e.g. by wearing covering clothing, using insect repellent, and sleeping in a screened-in or air-conditioned room) and to eliminate possible mosquito breeding grounds on their properties (e.g. small pockets of fresh water, such as rainwater that has collected in cans, bottles, tires, flower pots, clogged gutters, etc.).
