Event

Private school students took to the streets of Dakar on Monday, November 26, to protest the lack of funding. Demonstrators gathered on Avenue Cheikh Anta Diop, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area throughout the day. Clashes broke out with security forces after protesters started throwing stones at police officers. Further violent demonstrations are possible in Dakar in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Around 40,000 private school students have been unable to return to classes due to lack of facilities and funds. According to Finance Minister Amadou Ba, the government did not budget enough funds to cover the costs of the private schools. Student leaders are accusing the government of forcing them to switch from public to private schools while knowing that there was not enough money to cover the costs.

Advice

Individuals in Dakar are advised to remain vigilant and avoid any form of public demonstrations or public gatherings due to the risk of violence.
