The Kerala High Court ruled to ban protests at the Sabarimala temple (Pathanamthitta district) on Tuesday, November 27. The state court also appointed an observation team to oversee implementation of the ban and ordered the Kerala state government to submit a sealed plan for accommodating women who wish to pray at the temple. Protests will be allowed outside the temple complex. Further mass demonstrations near the temple and at airports in Kerala are likely throughout the pilgrimage season, which ends on December 27. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

On September 28, the Indian Supreme Court overturned a ban on women between the ages of 10 and 50 entering the Sabarimala temple, a Hindu shrine to the god Ayyappan. It is open from November 16 to December 27 for the Mandala Pooja Mahotsavam Hindu festival. As of November 27, no women have entered the temple complex due to large numbers of protesters.

Individuals in Kerala are advised to monitor the situation, avoid public gatherings due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions (e.g. orders to disperse) issued by local authorities.
