Nigeria: ISWA militants kill three soldiers in Borno state November 27

Nigeria News Alert

ISWA militants kill three soldiers in Cross-Kauwa village (Borno state) November 27; similar attacks possible over the near term

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/29/2018, 12:00 AM until 12/1/2018, 11:59 PM (Africa/Lagos). COUNTRY/REGION Cross-Kauwa (Borno state)

Event

Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) militants reportedly killed three soldiers in an attack on a military base in Cross-Kauwa village (Kukawa local government area, Borno state) on Tuesday, November 27. The attack reportedly forced remaining soldiers to retreat from the base to Monguno and Kekeno. Further attacks by ISWA are likely in Borno state in the near term.

Context

Similar attacks on the military have recently been reported in Kukawa local government area. In general, the northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and ISWA. Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Advice

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex, notably in the northeast (e.g. Borno). Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
