Israel/Syria: Israeli and Syrian forces exchange fire November 29

Israel News Alert

Israeli and Syrian forces reportedly exchange fire November 29; Syrian air defenses intercept hostile targets over Al-Kiswah, IDF investigates reports of projectile landing in Golan Heights

TIMEFRAME expected from 11/29/2018, 12:00 AM until 11/30/2018, 11:59 PM (Asia/Jerusalem). COUNTRY/REGION Al-Kiswah, West Bank

Event

Israeli and Syrian forces reportedly exchanged fire on Thursday evening (local time), November 29, with Syrian state media claiming that Syrian air defenses intercepted and downed "hostile targets" over Al-Kiswah (Rif Dimashq province). Unconfirmed reports claimed that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) airstrikes targeted and hit Iran-linked installations in the area. The IDF is also investigating reports of a projectile falling in the Golan Heights. Further exchange of fire between IDF and Syrian troops is possible over the coming hours.

Context

Israeli and Syrian forces infrequently exchange fire over the Israeli-Syrian border, with Israeli forces typically targeting alleged Iran-affiliated military facilities and with Syrian regime forces firing on the Golan Heights in retaliation.

Syria remains enmeshed in a complex civil war that started between the Assad government and opposition forces in March 2011. Today, the conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.

Advice

Individuals in Israel are advised to monitor developments to the situation and to adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Some Western governments advise their citizens against all travel near the Israeli-Syrian border.

Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
