The Korea Meteorological Administration issued cold wave warnings in the morning (local time) of Wednesday, December 5, for several provinces across the country. Temperatures have reached as low as -4°C (25°F) in the capital Seoul, -10.9°C (12.40°F) in Cheorwon (Gangwon province), and -2.7°C (37°F) in Daejeon (Chungcheong province). The agency forecast further cold weather in the coming days. The cold snap is expected to last through the weekend and into the coming week.


The average low temperature in Seoul for the month of December is -3.2°C (26.2°F).


Individuals present in South Korea are advised to remain vigilant when driving in icy conditions, adhere to any advice issued by the local authorities, and keep abreast of the situation via weather forecasts. It is advisable to avoid mountain roads and remote areas.

Generally, during periods of severe cold it is advisable to limit outdoor activities, especially for vulnerable individuals - e.g. children, seniors, and pregnant women. Watch for signs of hypothermia and seek immediate medical attention if they occur.
