Amtrak will suspend train service from Saturday, December 8, through Tuesday, December 11, for much of the eastern United States south of Washington, DC. Routes running from New York to New Orleans, Miami, Chicago, and Charlotte will either be canceled or modified due to the incoming winter storm that is forecast to affect areas from New Mexico to Virginia over the weekend. Residual delays and crowded conditions are expected to persist into the following week. More information can be found on the Amtrak website.
A winter storm is expected to bring snow, ice, and mixed precipitation to large areas of the Plains and South, with 5-43 cm (17 in) of snow expected in some areas of North Carolina.
Individuals traveling via train are advised to confirm their reservations, maintain a flexible itinerary, and seek alternative modes of transportation, if necessary. Remember that driving conditions may be dangerous and flights may be delayed or canceled.
