Boko Haram militants assaulted two Nigerian military bases in Borno state on Thursday, December 6, and Friday, December 7. The first attack occurred at approximately 21:30 (local time) on Thursday in the town of Rann. Militants were eventually repelled after an hour-long fight the left several homes and the local UNICEF clinic burned after the fighters retreated. On Friday, suspected Boko Haram fighters assaulted the Nigerian army’s forward operating base in Bama at approximately 03:45. According to military sources, the battle lasted until around 07:00 and no military casualties were reported during either engagement. Further attacks by Boko Haram fighters are possible in Borno state in the near term.

The northeastern region of Nigeria (i.e. the states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa) is highly susceptible to attacks by Islamist militants, including from Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA). Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory, attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.

Individuals in Borno state are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Nigeria remains complex. Although travel is permissible in some areas, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
