Spain News Alert

Local authorities to increase security measures in Spain following December 11 attack in Strasbourg (France); associated disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/13/2018, 12:00 AM until 1/3/2019, 11:59 PM (Europe/Madrid). COUNTRY/REGION Spain

Heightened security measures were implemented throughout Spain, following the December 11 shooting in Strasbourg (France). Additional security forces can be expected in crowded areas, notably those where Christmas celebrations are held. Stricter controls, along with potential transportation disruptions, are to be anticipated in these areas.

A gunman opened fire on crowds near a Christmas market located on the Grand Île of Strasbourg at approximately 20:00 on December 11, killing three people and wounding several others. Interior Ministry officials confirmed military troops had deployed to secure the market and exchanged fire with the gunman, wounding him, before he fled the scene. The suspect had previously been flagged for radicalization by French intelligence services and was killed by police in Strasbourg on December 13.

Individuals in Spain are advised to remain vigilant, report all suspicious objects and behavior to the police, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
