Protests held by affiliates of the Sabaa political party are ongoing in Beirut as of Friday morning, December 14 (local time). Participants have gathered in front of the Labour and Industry ministries to request a government be formed and to denounce government corruption. Minor clashes have occurred with security forces, causing one protestor to be lightly injured. Demonstrations should persist until 14:00. Localized transportation disruptions along with potential unrest are expected throughout the day.
Since the May 2018 legislative elections, Lebanon is left without a government, as involved parties fail to agree on their representation within the Cabinet. Prime Minister Saad Hariri is currently opposing the inclusion of Sunni members of the pro-March 8 movement in the future government. The pro-March 8 party is supported by Hezbollah.
The Sabaa political party comes from civil society and claims to be an anti-system group.
Individuals present in Beirut are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all protests as a precaution.
