Australia: Cyclone Owen brings heavy rainfall and flooding in Queensland

Australia News Alert

Heavy rain to affect North Queensland until December 19; flood alerts in place

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/17/2018, 12:00 AM until 12/17/2018, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Queensland

Heavy rainfall affected areas in North Queensland - including Halifax, Cardwell Range, and Braemeadows - on Saturday, December 15, and Sunday, December 16. Many roads were closed north of Ingham due to flooding; motorists were advised to avoid the Bruce Highway between Cairns and Townsville. On December 17, local authorities issued several flood warnings for Dalby, Ranges Bridge, and areas near Ipswich. Inclement weather conditions are expected to persist near the Queensland coast, notably between Townsville and Mackay, until December 19.

Owen is the first cyclone of the season to hit Australia. The Australian cyclone season typically lasts from November to April.

Individuals present in the affected regions are advised to monitor local weather reports and weather alerts issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, confirm travel reservations, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
