A deadly shooting occurred at the Bekele Mola Hotel, in Moyale (Oromia region) on Monday, December 17, killing at least 12 people. The incident took place during a meeting between members of the federal army, of regional security forces, and of the Oromo and Somali communities discussing the potential transfer of the security of the city from the regional forces to the federal army. Further details have yet to be released regarding the origin of the attack; however, it comes amid fresh violence that erupted last week between the Oromo and the Somali ethnic communities, in which at least 21 people were killed and over 60 wounded.
Moyale is a flashpoint for recurrent ethnic clashes between the Somali and Oromo groups, and regularly experiences violent incidents.
Individuals in Moyale, and more generally in the Oromia region, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid any large gatherings and demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home government.
