Malaysia: Tension remains high at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Subang Jaya

Malaysia News Alert

Heightened police presence reported in Sri Maha Mariamman Temple (Subang Jaya; Selangor state) December 18, amid land dispute

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/18/2018, 12:00 AM until 12/18/2018, 11:59 PM (UTC). COUNTRY/REGION Selangor

As of Tuesday, December 18, 400 members of the police forces as well as anti-riot police detachments have been deployed to maintain order and secure the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu temple, as well as the One City Development business complex both located in Subang Jaya (Selangor state), amid fears of further land dispute following the death on December 17 of a firefighter present during violent protests held on November 27 to denounce the relocation of the religious site. However, despite the increased security presence, violent protests cannot be ruled out in the coming hours and days.

Protests erupted in Subang Jaya in late November to denounce the relocation of the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu temple decided by the owner of the Complex. Several people were injured and properties damaged during the protests.

Individuals in Selangor are advised to monitor development to the situation, avoid the vicinity of the temple, avoid all demonstrations as violence may flare up without warning, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
