Port workers reportedly launched a protest march in the port district of Valparaíso (Valparaíso region) as of 11:30 (local time) on Wednesday, December 19. Authorities have suspended public transportation between Plaza Sotomayor and Playa Ancha. A heightened security presence is expected in the vicinity of the demonstration. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out. Similar protests are to be anticipated in Valparaíso region over the coming days.
On December 18, security forces fired tear gas and used water cannons to disperse demonstrators who had erected roadblocks in Valparaíso amid an ongoing port worker strike launched in mid-November to demand better working conditions. The strike and related protests have reportedly spread to other cities such as in Iquique, Antofagasta, San Antonio, and Puerto Montt.
Individuals in Chile, notably in Valparaíso region, are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and to adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
