The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) lifted the tsunami alert issued for parts of northeastern Russia after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula at 05:01 (local time) on Thursday, December 20. The Ministry of Emergency Situations indicated there have been no reports of casualties or infrastructure damage as of 07:00. Further aftershocks are, however, possible over the coming hours and days.

Context

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck 82 km (50 mi) west of Nikol'skoye followed by at least five aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 5.0 to 5.6.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor developments to the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
