Heightened security measures have been implemented at German airports, particularly in southwestern Germany, on Thursday, December 20, after security officials were alerted to suspicious activity at Stuttgart Airport (STR). According to local sources, authorities are investigating four suspects, including two people from North Rhine-Westphalia state, who were reportedly taking photographs of the airport's grounds and terminal. The suspects, whose names and other details were given to German authorities from Moroccan intelligence officials, have not been located by police.
Increased security measures are to be expected at German airports, and particularly STR, over the coming days. Consequent delays are possible, including crowding and extended lines at security checkpoints at German airports, through the holiday season.
Local reports also claimed that two of the suspects were seen taking photographs at Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), serving Paris, in recent days.
Individuals traveling via STR and other German airports are advised to report suspicious objects and behavior to police and be prepared for congestion and delays at security checkpoints.
