According to Uttar Pradesh authorities, 100 million to 150 million people, including 1 million foreign citizens, are expected to attend the eight-week Kumbh Mela festival beginning January 15 in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad). An estimated 800 additional trains will run during the pilgrimage and the government will operate four floating terminals to facilitate river taxi services. An estimated 8500 security personnel will be deployed for the events. The festival will last until March 4, 2019.
The Kumbh Mela is traditionally held every three years in one of four cities along India's sacred rivers. During this religious festival, millions of pilgrims will bathe at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the Saraswati.
Individuals in Uttar Pradesh over the following two months are advised to anticipate crowded conditions, a heightened threat of petty crime and significant disruptions to daily life, including transportation, accommodation, and business disruptions.
