Thailand News Alert

Health officials warn of mosquito-borne disease in Phuket province; take precaution against mosquitoes

TIMEFRAME expected from 12/18/2018, 12:00 AM until 1/1/2019, 11:59 PM (Asia/Bangkok). COUNTRY/REGION Phuket

Event

Health officials have warned of an increased risk associated with mosquito-borne diseases in Phuket province. According to local sources, at least 73 cases of mosquito-borne diseases, mostly chikungunya and dengue, have been reported throughout the province between January and December. The most affected areas include Mueang Phuket, Thalang, and Kathu districts.

Context

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease. Symptoms include high fever, joint and muscle pain, rash, headache, nausea, and fatigue. The virus is rarely fatal but lingering joint pain can last for several weeks, even months, after the initial recovery. No treatment or vaccine for the virus is currently available.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease found mostly in urban and semi-urban areas. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, nausea, and rash. In a small number of cases, the potentially deadly dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) may develop, resulting in internal bleeding, enlargement of the liver, and high fever.

Advice

Individuals in Thailand are advised to take measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites (e.g. wearing covering clothing, using insect repellent, sleeping in a screened-in or air-conditioned room) and to eliminate possible mosquito breeding grounds (small pockets of fresh water, such as rainwater that has collected in cans, bottles, tires, flower pots, clogged gutters, etc.).
