Tropical depression Usman is expected to reach the Eastern, Western, and Central Visayas regions as well as the Caraga region, the Palawan and Mindanao provinces on Wednesday, December 26, bringing heavy downpours and thunderstorms. Eastern Visayas, the Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur are expected to be particularly impacted by this seasonal rainfall, which may result in local flooding and landslides. Heavy rain is expected in Eastern Visayas and Bicol on December 27 and 28. Usman could make landfall in Eastern Samar province on December 28.
Tropical cyclones and typhoons are common in the Western Pacific from May to November. Usman is the Philippines' 21st tropical cyclone for 2018.
Individuals in the Philippines are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, reconfirm flights, obey instructions issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders), and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
